The SN is on the bottom of the butt frame, under the grips, perhaps also under the bottom side of the barrel, and/or on the rear of the cylinder. In 1945 they started with S811338 and went to 999999 in 1948. Based on your serial number yours was probably late 1947 to early 1948. In 1957 the 38 M&P became the model 10.
